The purpose of the ILO is to facilitate communication between fisheries managers, researchers and members of industry. It is generally recognised that historically, effective communication between these sectors has been poor, in many circumstances contributing to undesirable outcomes. The Liaison Officer role was developed to address this issue, and has enhanced communication between stakeholders in the Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery. The specific roles of the ILO are:
- To liaise with the peak SESSF industry associations (SETFIA, SEFA and GABIA), SETMAC, GHaTMAC and AFMA.
- To report to the SETMAC and GHaTMAC Chairman and on day-to-day issues with the SETMAC and GHaTMAC Executive Officers.
- To liaise with the SESSF industry, AFMA staff and stock assessment scientists on matters pertaining to stock assessment, research and management. Part of the requirement of the ILO contract is to provide reports of the activities of the ILO to SETMAC and GHaTMAC. This report covers the work undertaken and meetings attended by the Industry Liaison Officer for the period August – March 2008.
