SeaNet is run by the not-for-profit group OceanWatch, but the project was de-funded by the Government in this year's Federal Budget.
Commercial fisherman and director of OceanWatch Australia Geoff Blackburn says it is a disappointing outcome for the industry.
"The greatest impact will be that the fishing industry or the fishermen themselves do not have the resources to employ an independent research body to continually monitor the industry, and to ensure sustainability with new practices," he said.
A spokeswoman for Fisheries Minister Tony Burke says SeaNet can reapply for its funding under the Government's new Caring for Our Country package
