GABIA to trial co-management of fishery

14/10/2008

The group discussed the further development of the GABIA co-management trial and the implementation of the elements previously agreed by the AFMA Board in February.

This includes greater strategic involvement of industry in TAC setting, research and assessment, observers and a direct decision making process for dealing with commercial and operational matters in the GABTF directly between AFMA and the industry association.

The workshop also considered trialing a range of quota related changes and efficiencies including catch disposal record reporting and quota reconciliation.

AFMA and GABIA are now exploring ways to formalise the co-management trial through a Memorandum of Understanding and associated documentation and policies.

GABIA also wish to explore the role of co-management in terms of better economic efficiency in the fishery which will be considered at a separate workshop.
