Dale Sumner, Chair of the Lakes Entrance Fishermens' Co operative, says the Asian market that fishermen would normally export to, doesn't want their seafood.
He says global economic concern means the importers can't sell the fish to other markets.
"Last week the exchange got down to I think roughly about the 62 (cents) mark, and I was very close to locking in quite an amount of exchange at that rate, but unfortunately because a lot of that whiting is re imported (to Australia) it's affected by the import price that can be paid in the Australian market as well," he says.
