King crab vessel operating Oct through May at Western edge of SESSF

10/08/2009

We have received a letter from a king crab pot fisherman operating in South Australia west of latitude 37o16' S and longitude 139o12' E in depths between 100-300m, to the edge of the SESSF fishery with GAB from October to the end of May each year.  He is concerned about interactions with trawlers.  Members operating in this area are asked to call Steve Clarke on 0428-838241 and be respectful of the position of his gear.  SETFIA has suggested that the best way to minimise interactions is to work constructively together.  We have also suggested that strobe lights be placed on pole buoys so gear is visible at night.
